The USA needs a government run Medicare plan

Post  doctorjack on Sat Aug 22, 2009 5:22 pm

Every other "civilized" country in the Western World funds medicare through taxes - the same way we pay for police, fire, highways... etc

Basic coverage from the government; insurance companies for extras (if you wish)

What you think?

The USA is not a socialist country like Canada and England. Government can never be as efficient as private enterprise in ANYTHING

Canada is a socialist country? The government since 2006 has been Conservative. Before that It was a Liberal government. The democratic socialist New Democratic Party (NDP) has never been a strong force in the federal parliament.

The World Health Organization's rankings of the world's health systems shows Canada comes in at 30 (nothing to be especially proud of), BUT the USA scores a shocking #37

WHO rankings by country

The reason we don't live as long as people in some other Western countries is because of our high murder rate. Should Big Brother government ban guns as well? (They're already doing a fine job of killing babies)

Pat -

I guess when you drive down a highway, or have to call the police and fire you scream and say, "Private enterprise could do this SO much better..." NOT

Meg -

Treating murder as a form of population control is really silly

This is a silly discussion

First of all - we DO have a government-run Medicare program and it IS funded by taxes (though it is only available to those currently eligible for Social Security). However, even the federal government sub-contracts the day-to-day operations of the program to private entities (private insurance companies). They handle the claims processing, call centers and physician enrollment. That's the only reason the program has been able to survive for the past 40 years - because it has been handled by private enterprise.

Secondly, the Canadian-style health system provides varying coverage depending on where one lives in Canada, so there really isn't "universal coverage" for all services. Once patients are discharged from a hospital setting, the levels of coverage are determined on a provincial level. Canada's system is always evolving because they realize their system is far from the "perfect system."

The French healthcare system was ranked #1 by WHO in the last survey (surveys are no longer done, by the way, because the WHO indicates that the process is too complex to be accurate). French workers have a full 20% of their wages taken to pay for the system. And most people further supplement the government-sponsored system with private insurance because the government plan does not provide 100% coverage for all services. The individual generally has to pay around 20% of the medical costs directly. And, if the individual chooses to go to a private hospital, they may to pay even more.

Lastly, police and fire protection are both handled on local and state levels - not federal. So that argument is comparing apples and oranges.

let's have local and state funded medicare then. Proper medical care is a right, not a luxury
